Columbus Dispatch High School Athlete of the Week


Voting is open for the athlete of the week. readers can now vote for their favorite high school athletes of the week on their desktop, the mobile web, or the Dispatch app once an hour by scrolling through the ballots listed below.

The deadline is Friday at 4 p.m.

The Athlete of the Week vote takes place each week at high school athletic competitions and recognizes athletes from all sports.

If you don’t see the ballot when you scroll to the bottom of this story, try refreshing the link or clearing your browser cache. Voters can vote by hour and by device. You don’t need to be a subscriber to vote.

The athletes were nominated over the past week for the vote starting Monday, October 18. You can nominate athletes for the performances of the coming week for the voting which begins on Monday October 25th.

Please do not send your votes by email; they won’t count. Nominations and votes are not the same thing.

Athletes are on this week’s ballot based on information made available to The Dispatch and nominations made over the past week.

Once athletes win during the regular season, they are not eligible to be back on the ballot before the playoffs. If athletes have not won in the regular season, they may be nominated more than once.

Here are the Athlete of the Week candidates for this week:

Dave Adolph, Dublin Jerome football: Had six catches for 80 yards and two touchdowns, including the winning touchdown on a 35-yard Hail Mary pass, in a 27-24 win over Olentangy.

Ryan Betts, Olentangy Berlin footballer: Scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Thomas Worthington to give Berlin its first OCC-Cardinal league title.

Chase Brecht, Olentangy Liberty football: Had nine catches for 154 yards and three touchdowns and nine carries for 87 yards in a 23-20 loss to Hilliard Davidson.

West Jefferson footballer Tyler Buescher: Completed 24 of 36 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns in a 19-0 win over Fairbanks.

JJ Calip, Worthington Kilbourne footballer: Ran for 212 yards and a touchdown and caught a killer pass in a 29-18 win over Westerville North.

Brian Fitzsimmons, Ready for Football: Run for 120 yards and a touchdown in a 36-0 win over Grandview.

Markez Gillam, Reynoldsbourg footballer: Run for 123 yards in a 52-14 win over Central Crossing.

Grace Green, Hamilton Township Volleyball: Premier in the league MSL Buckeye for hitting percentage and kills (362) and has reached 1,000 career kills. She is fourth in state for Division 2 for kills and 18th in the league for aces, 23rd for digs and 17th for blocks. She was named the MSL Buckeye Player of the Year and Premier League Team.

Carson Gresock, Upper Arlington footballer: Run for 170 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries in a 42-13 win over Dublin Coffman.

Ryan Grohe, Olentangy Liberty football: Passed for 285 yards and three touchdowns in a 23-20 loss to Hilliard Davidson.

Blake Horvath, footballer Hilliard Darby: Got five rushing touchdowns on 15 carries for 171 yards and threw for 79 yards on 3 of 5 passes in a 41-20 win over Thomas Worthington.

Aidan Ighnat, Hilliard Davidson footballer: Kicks on the field of 29, 40 and 31 yards, the third being the winner of the match at the end of the allotted time in a 23-20 victory against Olentangy Liberty. He was also 2 for 2 on PAT.

Carter James, Columbus Academy footballer: Ran for 111 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-3 win over Bexley.

Dijon Jennings, Reynoldsbourg football: Passed for 311 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a touchdown in a 52-14 win over Central Crossing.

Tyler Johnson, Centerburg footballer: Ran for 110 yards and a touchdown in a 14-12 win over Northmor.

Brock Kidwell, New Albany footballer: Ran for 135 yards and a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass in a 20-19 win over Pickerington North.

Simon Monnin, Upper Arlington footballer: Completed 13 of 20 passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-13 win over Dublin Coffman.

Leo Nixon, Hilliard Davidson footballer: Run for 139 yards on 21 carries in a 23-20 win over Olentangy Liberty.

Evan O’Connell, Ready for Football: Kicked five baskets in a 36-0 win over Grandview.

Dom Orsini, Waterson footballer: Ran for 191 yards and three touchdowns in five carries and added a 50-yard punt return touchdown in a 51-0 win over Centennial.

Luca Romanelli, DeSales footballer: Scored three goals in a 5-1 win over Chillicothe.

Rechee Smith, DeSales footballer: Caught seven passes for 100 yards in a 28-6 win over St. Francis (Hamburg, NY)

Jake Werling, Olentangy Orange footballer: Ran for 206 yards and three touchdowns and added 145 passing yards in a 29-27 victory over Hilliard Bradley.
